Desaru is a small town of Bandar Penawar about 2 kilometers inland. It is a coastal resort area in Southeastern Johor, Peninsular Malaysia and located approximately 88 kilometers east of Johor Bahru, on the South China Sea. Located at the south-eastern corner of Johor, Desaru is the ideal beach destination with over 25km of white sandy beaches fringed by palm trees and casuarinas.
Desaru is a very popular beach mostly to the locals. You will see a lot of Malays bathing with long pants and t-shirts, a good way to maintain modesty. For visitors, topless is not appropriate, but a normal bikini for girls and shorts for guys is ok.There are a lot of things that you can do there even though it is not well developed because Desaru have a nice wide beach and shallow, clear water. The resort is open to all and most locals congregate at the public beach which provides a car park, a few barbeque pits and gritty toilets.
Here, enjoy a myriad of water sports including snorkelling, water-skiing, canoeing, wind-surfing and sailing. Other forms of recreation include learning to fly an ultra-light aircraft; go-karting; jungle trekking; horseback riding, archery and off-road adventures.
Things you can do:
Snorkeling
It is a good option, but don't expect banks of colorful fishes and wonderful sea creatures. Scuba diving here is out of the question, although some of the resorts do arrange trips out to Johor's northern islands.
Surfing
If wind is good, the waves are quite OK, and especially the lack of jellyfish and sharks makes it an attractive location.
Fireflies
Excursions to see the fireflies (api-api) in the Sungeii Lebam River are very popular. While theoretically possible to arrange yourself, this would require bumping about dirt roads to find the dock and then cruising around a pitch black jungle river, so it's much easier to join one of the hotel excursions. The best time to go is after rain on a fullf moon.
Other options mostly of interest to families with young kids to entertain are:
- Desaru Fruit Farm
- Ostrich Wonderland
