Kota Johor Lama or Old Johor Fort is located about 27 kilometers from Kota Tinggi town in Teluk Sengat. It is a historical site of great importance to the Johor sultanate. It was the site of fierce wars amongst the local Malays and outside invading forces.
During the reign of Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah II (1528-1564), the Old Johor Fort was built in 1540. Its strategic location right by Johor River, the clever use of the natural terrain and the construction of the fort enable Johor Lama to become a secure trading post for the region. The natural environment of the fort makes it easier to supervise the movement of the ships especially the threat from the Achinese and the Portuguese.
Today, you will be able to see remnants of the historical settlement though not as impressive as once must have been. Two tombs can be found near the fort which is believed to be of Sultan Alauddin and his warriors.
