'Piring' means saucer in Malay and 'Putu' simply means cake; 'Putu Piring' traditionally is a local steamed palm sugar rice cakes with a centre of melted palm sugar (Gula Melaka).
Putu Piring is a Malay adaptation of the Indian traditional cake Putu Mayam and the Chinese tradition cake Kueh Tutu from Singapore.
