Cameron Highlands is a highland area located in Pahang. About 121 kilometers east of Ipoh and about 214 kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur, Cameron Highland is considered Malaysia’s green bowl supplying vegetables to the major cities of the country and even to Singapore. At 5,000 ft (1,500 m) above sea level it is the highest spot on the mainland. The cool climate makes it an excellent tea growing area and indeed the Cameron tea is highly prized in the world market. With temperatures ranging between 25 and 10 degrees Celsius, this place is popular all year round.
Cameron Highlands is home to many tea plantations as it is being Malaysia's largest tea-producing region. With its many farms the area is also known as a major supplier of legumes and vegetables to both Malaysia and Singapore, and is one of Malaysia's prime tourist destinations. Apart from the cool weather, main attractions in Cameron Highlands include Robinson Falls, Rose Garden and Strawberry and Vegetable farms. A visit to Cameron Highlands is well worthwhile as there are also other interesting spots such as Cactus Point, Cactus Valley and the BOH Tea Plantation. Plus, there is Market Square, the Cameron Highlands Time Tunnel Galleria and accommodations. Stroll around and admire the old colonial buildings such as the Old Smokehouse. The hill station is enclosed by jungles and traces are marked for jungle trekking. There are also various villages inhabited by indigenous people.
Getting there
Cameron Highlands is located at Pahang, just over the border of Perak state. Most visitors drive up with their own vehicles, but budget travellers may take a bus ride from Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Singapore - all which offer luxury or economy coaches running daily trips from major bus terminals. Alternatively, you can take a bus up from Tapah and Ipoh using the Kurnia Bistari or Regal buses, but these require a transit from the city or other major destinations. There is no flight or train ride available to Cameron Highlands (closest airport at Ipoh and train station at Tapah). Finally, a shuttle mini van service also runs from Chinatown in KL and Taman Negara (Kuala Tembeling).
