Located in 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) from the city center of Georgetown, Penang Hill is a hill resort comprising a group of peaks, the major hill system of Penang. Also known by the local name as “Bukit Bendera” which refers to Flagstaff Hill, the most developed peak. With elevation of about 833 m (2723 ft), Penang Hill has proved that it is one of the main attractions not only to international but also to domestic visitors. One can escape from the heat of the tropical city of Georgetown for it is much cooler than in the city below. It is about 3 degrees cooler than the places near the coast. The cooling and serenity of the hill especially on top of the peak provide calmness, relaxation and is a place to relax and refresh.

One can either go up the hills by foot or by riding on the famous red Swiss made funicular train. As the railway was built in 1923, the funicular train takes about 20 to 25 minutes to reach to the top. It cost of RM 4.50 per person, one way and it can carry a maximum of 80 passengers per trip. As you ride on the funicular, you will pass several small stations, small hotels as well as guesthouses on this stretch. Yet, if you were to take the train to the hilltop you are going to miss on what nature has to offer such as a mist covered valley, giant bamboo tress, crystal cool pond, farm, birds as well as various species of plants. Also, one can rent on a 4WD vehicle to go up to the hill top. The service is provided by Bellevue Hotel and it cost from RM 70.00 to RM 130.00 depending on your location.
