Nasi Kandar

Being a popular northern Malaysian dish, which originates from Penang Nasi Kandar is a steamed rice which can be plain or mildly flavored and served with a variety of curries and other side dishes. One can choose a variety of side dishes which include curry fish, curry beef, curry chicken, roasted chicken, boiled egg, okra, squid, prawn, brinjal/aubergine/egg plant and fish roe. What makes Nasi Kandar, so alluring to the taste buds is that it is served with the side dishes on a single plate where a mixture of curries is poured on the rice giving Nasi Kandarits unique taste.

Nasi Kandar was named after rice hawkers or vendors would balance a pole on the shoulder with two huge containers of rice meals. After that, the name has remained till today. Yet, this portable style of selling Nasi Kandar has disappeared entirely, and today all Nasi Kandar stalls are more likely to be fixed somewhere, either in Nasi Kandar restaurants or in stalls by the roadside.

For the Nasi Kandar enthusiasts, we recommend you the famous Nasi Kandar Masjid Kapitan Keling at Lebuh Pitt in Pulau Pinang, which located next to Kapitan Keling Mosque facing Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling. It's trade name since the 1950’s is sure to arouse the 'pangs of desire' as this Nasi Kandar is well known for its flavorsome 'nasi dalca' and tantalizing mutton kurma (curry).
