Originally known as Bond Street, Gaya Street is the main street of city of Kota Kinabalu. Fully restored in the 1950s and 1960s, the shop houses were used in the traditional way with shops on the ground floor and residential units on the upper floor. Today, Gaya Street has the largest number of legal offices, banks, and financial institutions of any street in Sabah.
Every Sunday morning, Gaya Street is closed to traffic for the Gaya Street Fair. For a small fee, traders set up a stall to sell almost anything ranging from fruits and vegetables, cut flowers and plants, arts and crafts, antiques and souvenirs, batik sarong, footwear, home made local cuisine and food, and even pet and herbs. Gaya Street Fair is the best place to experience the cross-section of the local population when entire families enjoy a Sunday outing.
